Joe Torres Biography
Joe Torres is an American Award-winning journalist and author who currently works as an anchor and reporter at WABC-TV in New York. Torres occasionally replaces anchors in the station’s eyewitness news broadcast (usually Bill Ritter). Prior to that, he and Sandra Bookman co-hosted the station’s Saturday and Sunday night newscasts.
He also hosts Tiempo, a long-running, panic-focused contemporary affairs show on WABC that airs on Sunday mornings. Torres is originally from Brooklyn, New York, and is of Puerto Rican descent. He joined the staff of Eyewitness News in 1996 as a general reporter.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joe attended PS 198 until sixth grade, when his family moved to Northern Westchester County. He is a proud graduate of John Jay High School in Cross River.
Joe is also a proud graduate of SUNY Brockport, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in communications. In college, he played college football in New York. Torres is an active member of the varsity football, basketball, and baseball teams.
He began his television career in 1987 as an NBC page in New York. However, Joe’s first reporting job was at WSAV-TV in Savannah, Georgia, where he worked as a general reporter and reporter covering the county government. After some time, Torres moved to ABC affiliate WNEP-TV in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to work as a Consumer Reporter, General Assignment Reporter and Weekend Anchor.
In 1992, Joe got a job as a Jersey Shore correspondent for Disney/ABC-owned WPVI-TV in Philadelphia.

Some of Joe’s most memorable reporting includes extensive coverage of Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis. Before John Paul II’s death, Joe followed the itinerant pontiff on his travels to Cuba, Mexico and the Holy Land, providing New Yorkers with local angles to mundane events. Furthermore, he was at the Vatican for the Pope’s silver anniversary and his death, when millions gathered in Rome to bid farewell to the spiritual leader.
In April 2005, Joe was in St. Peter’s Square when white smoke from the Sistine Chapel informed the world of the election of Pope Benedict XVI. Three years later, Torres did an in-depth coverage of Pope Benedict’s visit to New York. He returned to the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square in March 2013 for the historic election of Pope Francis, the Church’s first Pontiff in Latin America.

Two days a week, Joe comes in from the street and goes to the anchor’s table. Every Saturday and Sunday night, Joe co-anchores the 5, 6 and 11 pm editions of Eyewitness News This Weekend.
Torres also serves as the host of ‘Tiempo’, a 30-minute public relations program aimed at the growing Latino population in the New York metropolitan area. ‘Tiempo’ airs every Sunday morning at 11:30.
His distinctive storytelling won him a Peabody Award and the Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting on the world-changing events of 9/11. Furthermore, Joe won an Emmy for his coverage of the Greenpoint gas tank implosions in 2001.
