Andrew Balbirnie is an expert Irish cricketer who has addressed his country in each of the game’s 3 organizations (Tests, ODIs and T20Is), as a top tier player. As of November 2019, he was delegate head of the group in each of the 3 arrangements. On the Irish circuit, he played for the Leinster Lightning (2013-Present) in all 3 configurations. An unusual event in cricket today, Andrew has also played home cricket beyond his home nation, approaching groups such as Middlesex County Cricket Club (2011-2015) and Glamorgan County Cricket Club (2020-2021) in England.

Andrew had already excelled in 2009 when he captained Ireland to triumph in the Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier competition. He was then named Ireland’s Crew Commander for the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Ireland finished as a sprinter to Bangladesh in the competition’s ‘Cycle Championship’, completing 10th overall out of 16 groups.

He was the top scorer of the 2018 Interprovincial Trophy (the top T20 cricket competition in Ireland) with 262 runs in just 6 matches. He was also the Leinster Lightning’s top scorer in the 2018 Inter-Provincial Championship (Ireland’s premier cricket competition) with 302 runs in just 4 matches.

In May 2018, he participated in Ireland’s first match in the global test project. That memorable match, against Pakistan, turned out to be a mixed experience for Andrew, as he was released for a few runs (no runs scored in either inning of a match) in that match. This made him the 44th batsman overall, and the first from Ireland, to pack a pair on his test cricket debut.

In August 2020, in the third and final match of Ireland’s respective ODI away series against England, he marked his 2,000th ODI cricket altercation. The match was a notable event for Irish cricket as they crushed the title holders on their terrace. To add icing on the cake, Ireland also maintained their most notable run in ODIs (329 runs) in that match.

In July 2021, he captained Ireland to their first ODI triumph against South Africa. He drove from the front in that match, scoring 102 runs on 117 balls to set a tough 291-run goal for South Africa. Ireland went on to dominate the game for 43 runs and was named the ‘Player of the Game’ for his performance.
