Gene Watson is an American country music singer best known for his 1975 hit Love in the Hot Afternoon. Among his hit songs include Fourteen Carat Mind and Farewell Party. Watson began his music career in the 1960s, performing at local nightclubs. During the day, he worked at an auto repair shop in Houston. He garnered a strong local audience with his stage act and released his debut single on Sun Valley Records.
In 1964, Grand Ole Opry duo The Wilburn Brothers took Watson on the road briefly. It was the Wilburn brothers who took Gene to Nashville for the first time and let him sing on stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Gene sang and was given a standing ovation.
Afterwards, they took him to the Ernest Tubb Record Shop, took the stage and broadcast on The Midnight Jamboree. Then he returned to Texas honky-tonks and a string of local singles during the 1960s. Additionally, one of Watson’s small-label singles reached Capitol Records in 1974. Gene achieved mainstream success when Capitol Records picked up Love in The Hot Afternoon.
Watson won the ROPE Awards “Entertainer of the Year” in 2018. It was an honor he shared with Jeannie Seely. In addition, it was the first time in the history of the awards that there was a tie in any category.
