He covered both sides of the Libyan conflict, interviewing Muammar Gaddafi’s sons Saif al Islam and Saadi Gaddafi, and being the first to broadcast live from Gaddafi’s compound after the NATO airstrikes. Eman al-Obeidy, an alleged rape survivor whose story of kidnapping, torture and rape by Qaddafi forces went viral, was also interviewed.
Robertson secured the first Western TV interview with the crown prince of the Bahrain region, as well as live coverage of tear gas amid the clashes. He also had an exclusive first interview with Najib Mikati, the then new prime minister of Lebanon, when street crime broke out.
Robertson has worked in conflict zones in Afghanistan, the former Yugoslavia, Pakistan and the Middle East for more than 20 years, breaking news and winning awards for insightful documentaries and in-depth reporting. He reported a wide range of stories and, after being killed by US Navy soldiers in May 2011, was one of the first Western journalists to penetrate Osama Bin Laden’s compound. He wrote from Norway about the horrific Anders Breivik massacre. In Beirut, Lebanon, he reported from Ground Zero, covering the 2006 Israeli-Lebanon crisis.
