Sharon Tay is an award-winning American journalist and former host of two shows on the MSNBC network. Furthermore, she is a former reporter for KCBS-TV and KCAL-TV in Los Angeles before being fired in 2020 after 13 years on the networks.
Born in Singapore, Tay and her family immigrated to the United States when she was seven. Her family settled in Connecticut for several years and she decided to move to the Philippines. She then attended the International School in Manila and later returned to the United States to complete high school at a boarding school. Sharon attended Boston University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism, majoring in international relations.
After graduation, her first break came in Boston, where she starred in, wrote and produced a weekend newscast for a local station. In 1993, KCCN-TV, now KION in Salinas, California, hired her as a general reporter. Later, Tribune Broadcasting recruited Tay to its KTLA-5 Los Angeles team as a general reporter. She became a weekend anchor for the morning edition of the news.

Her hosting roles on MSNBC included stints on “MSNBC at the Movies” and “MSNBC Entertainment Hot List,” where she hosted the show. She subsequently returned to the Los Angeles local news on CBS 2 and KCAL9. In November 2013, she was moved to the KCBS-TV morning news from 4:30 am to 7 am and the noon news from 11 am to 11:30 am.
She was then moved to KCAL9’s 4pm and 9pm news in October 2018. On May 27, 2020, KCBS fired her. The cuts were part of a company-wide cost cut that comes nearly six months after the merger of Viacom and CBS, a corporate union that executives say would save $750 million.
