Biography of Michael Wilbon

Michael Wilbon is an American journalist who currently works as a commentator for ESPN and is a former sports writer and columnist for The Washington Post. He is an analyst at ESPN and has co-hosted Pardon the Interruption at ESPN with former Post writer Tony Kornheiser since 2001. Wilbon attended and graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism.

He began working for The Washington Post in 1980 after a summer internship at the paper in 1979 and 1980. Wilbon covered college sports, Major League Baseball, the NFL, and the NBA. That was before his promotion to full-time columnist in February 1980. His Post column is as much about sports culture as it is about action on the court or field.

In his career, he has covered ten summer and winter Olympics for the Washington Post. He was also the only reporter based outside of Hawaii. This was to cover Virginia basketball’s historic turn to the top of the rankings by then-NAIA member Chaminade in 1982. During his time at the Post, he gained a reputation as “one of the best deadline writers in American newspapers”.

The Society of Professional Journalists named him a top sports columnist in 2001. In recent years, he has become better known as an ESPN personality. He wrote his last common for the Washington Post and has officially devoted himself full-time to working for ESPN and ABC. This was on December 7, 2010.

He began co-hosting ESPN’s daily opinion forum Pardon the Interruption with Tony Kornheiser on October 22, 2001. In late 2006, he agreed to a multi-year contract extension with ESPN. The network gained priority with regard to conflicts with its newspaper assignments. The first major conflict took place on February 4, 2007. It was when he covered a Detroit Pistons-Cleveland Cavaliers game instead of Super Bowl XLI.
