Jonathan Karl biography
Jonathan Karl is an American political journalist who is currently the chief Washington correspondent for ABC News and co-anchor of The Week with George Stephanopoulos. He has covered all major assignments in Washington, DC, including the White House, Capitol, Pentagon and State Department, and has also reported in over 30 countries covering US politics, foreign policy and military.
Karl served as Chief White House Correspondent for ABC News from December 2012 until the end of the Trump administration in January 2021. Additionally, he is the author of the 2020 book Front Row in the 2021 book Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show. In 2021, Mediaite named him one of the 10 “Most Influential in News Media”.
After his education, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 1990, where he was editor-in-chief of Vassar Spectator. After graduating, he began his career as a researcher and reporter for The New Republic.

In 1994, he became a reporter for the New York Post and was later hired to cover politics as a Generation X reporter at CNN in 1996. He became CNN’s congressional correspondent.
Karl joined ABC News in January 2003 as a Senior Foreign Correspondent covering the Department of State. He first interviewed Donald Trump in 1994 for a New York Post article about Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s honeymoon at Trump Tower.
He worked for ABC News covering national political news and later became Senior National Security Correspondent in December 2005. In 2006, he received an Emmy nomination for his coverage of the genocide in Darfur, Sudan.
Karl was named Chief White House Correspondent for ABC News in December 2012. He continues as ABC News’ Chief Correspondent in Washington and co-anchor of This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Although he is an ABC correspondent, he has appeared frequently on MSNBC, CNN and Fox News.
