Kenny Mayne Biography

Kenny Mayne is an American journalist who currently works as a sports personality and is best known for his work on ESPN from 1994 to today. He appeared as the host of Kenny Mayne’s Wider World of Sports on ESPN.com. Mayne also appeared as a weekly Sunday NFL Countdown contributor with their weekly segment “Mayne Event”.

Born in Kent, Kenny attended community college and was an honorable mention as a junior college quarterback in 1978 at Wenatchee Valley College in Wenatchee. He later graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 1982 in broadcasting.

While at UNLV, he was a backup quarterback for two years and then signed as a free agent with the Seattle Seahawks. After starting his television career with a brief stint as a reporter for KLVX-TV in Las Vegas, he spent 7 years at KSTW-TV in Seattle. Eventually, Mayne became a weekend sports anchor and weekday news reporter. However, he left KSTW in 1989.

ESPN signed him in 1994 after he sent ESPN a note asking if the network would sign him. He started at ESPN as a SportSmash anchor on ESPN2. Eventually, he became the anchor of the weekend edition of RPN 2Night from beginning on Labor Day weekend in 1995 until 1997.

After a few years at SportsCenter, he moved to a variety of ESPN nightly shows. Included in his repertoire was the game show 2 Minute Drill. He is now most often seen as the host of ABC and ESPN horse racing events.

Kenny returned to SportsCenter on October 15, 2013 after a five-year absence. A new deal with ESPN signed earlier that month saw him anchor 70 episodes of SportsCenter and host 10 special features a year through 2015. The deal effectively ended his role in horse racing and ended his Wider World Sports series.

However, on May 10, 2021, he announced that he would be leaving ESPN after 27 years as an ESPN anchor and correspondent. From July to September of the same year, Kenny, along with another former ESPN anchor Cari Champion, presented streaming coverage of the 2020 Summer Olympics on Peacock called Tokyo Tonight.
