Martin Lewis biography
Martin Lewis is an English financial journalist and broadcaster who is the founder of MoneySavingExpert.com. However, he sold the site in 2012 to the Moneysupermarket.com group for up to £87 million.
Born in Manchester, Lewis attended The King’s School, an independent school in Chester. He went on to read Government and Law at the London School of Economics. In 1997 he became a postgraduate student in Broadcast Journalism at the Center for Journalism Studies at Cardiff University. Lewis also received an honorary award in Business Administration from the University of Chester in 2013.
After graduating, he was secretary general of the LSE Studies Union. He then went to work in the City of London for the Brunswick Group. Brunswick is a financial communications consultancy. In addition, he became a BBC Business Unit producer, working on BBC Radio Five Live’s business programs and as editor of BBC Radio 4’s Today.
After the collapse of Simply Money, he contributed to a “Deal of the Week” column in the Sunday Express. He also featured “Money Saving Expert” slots on Channel 5’s daytime show Open House with Gloria Hunniford. Lewis returned to the BBC to work as a business and personal finance reporter for the corporation’s BBC One Breakfast News.
In 2005, he hosted a daytime television series on ITV called Make Me Rich, and in 2008 and a peak-time show on Five called It Pays to Watch!. He also presented special money issues for ITV’s Tonight and appeared as a “Money Saving Expert” in various magazines.
He currently appears on ITV’s This Morning and is an occasional guest on other news and magazine shows. He also began co-hosting The Martin Lewis Money Show. He initially hosted the show with Saira Khan and recently hosted the show with Angelica Bell. Additionally, he appears weekly on the Emma Barnett Show on BBC Radio Five Live.
