Leslie Mayes is an American journalist who currently works as a weekday news correspondent for NBC Connecticut. In 2015, she became a member of the station’s staff. She is also the creator and host of Connecticut in Color, a program committed to highlighting stories and discussing issues affecting communities of color in Nutmeg State.
Mayes previously worked as a morning reporter for News 14 Carolina in Charlotte, North Carolina. Prior to her stint in the South, she worked as a Washington branch producer for Time Warner Cable News, where she covered national politics. Leslie also covered President Obama’s inaugurations as well as several State of the Union speeches while in the nation’s capital.
Leslie began her television career as a news assistant and photographer for NY1 News in New York. She followed the presidential campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the coup in the New York State Senate, and Eliot Spitzer’s resignation from the campaign while she was there.
Mayes was born and raised in Washington, DC, and attributed her early interest in news and current events, particularly national politics, to her upbringing in the nation’s capital. Leslie studied government and politics at University of St. John in New York and graduated with honors.
She is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and enjoys working with young people from underserved neighborhoods and telling stories that might otherwise go unnoticed.
