Tom Gjelten is an American journalist and author who currently works as a religion and belief correspondent for National Public Radio (NPR). Gjelten has been a reporter for NPR since 1982, when he started out as a labor and education reporter. He recently covered diplomatic and national security affairs from NPR’s Washington, DC headquarters.

Tom is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2004, he and his colleagues at NPR won a Peabody Award for their coverage of the Iraq War.

Gjelten has reported on national security, terrorism, intelligence and the military for National Public Radio. From 1986 to 1990 he worked as a correspondent for NPR in Latin America in Mexico City, and from 1990 to 1994 he worked as a correspondent for Central Europe in Berlin. He has covered the wars in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Colombia and Guatemala over the years. He also reported on the wars in Croatia and Bosnia, as well as the 1990-1991 Gulf War.

Tom’s reporting from Sarajevo since 1994 became the basis for his book Sarajevo Daily: A City and Its Newspaper Under Siege, which was hailed by the New York Times as a gruesome depiction of the slow slaughter of a city, named the New York Times. He has won numerous accolades on NPR, including the George Polk Award, the Overseas Press Club’s Lowell Thomas Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award. In addition, he was part of the NPR team that received an Alfred I. DuPont Columbia University Silver Baton and a George Foster Peabody Award for covering the 9/11 attacks in Iraq. Gjelten began his career as a freelance writer and public school teacher at North Haven Community School in North Haven, Maine, after graduating from University of Minnesota.
