Muriel Clair biography

Muriel Clair is an American Award-winning journalist who currently serves as a reporter for WGN-TV’s “Teacher of the Month,” in which WGN-TV recognizes outstanding local teachers for their classroom accomplishments. She joined the network in 1978, and after 34 years of service, Clair made the decision to work part-time in December 2011.

Before working in television, Muriel taught English in public schools in Detroit and Kansas City. She then began her broadcasting career on NBC’s Kansas City affiliate WDAF-TV in the early 1970s. At the station, she won accolades that earned her a spot on WMAQ-TV in Chicago to cover the issue of education from the point of view of a former teacher and an experienced journalist.

In her career, Clair has received numerous awards for excellence in journalism. In 2007, Muriel was inducted into the Chicago Silver Circle of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which honors individuals who have spent 25 years or more in the television industry.

She won the Broadcasters Award for African-American TV and Filmmakers in 2003. In addition, the Northwestern University Law School’s Center for Wrongful Convictions awarded Muriel for her “Journalistic Integrity and Work to Improve the Criminal Justice System.” She was also awarded a Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Woman of the Year for “Exceptional Service” in the field of communication in 2000.

Clair served as a board member of the Marcy Newberry Association, a social service agency. She also actively worked with Child Service. It is a community-based organization that helps children regain and control their lives. Additionally, Muriel has served on the Free Street Theater board and mentored the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism program.

Muriel is a proud member of the Chicago Association of Black Journalists. In addition to her recognition as the Best Spot News reporter in 199, Clair was named one of Today’s Chicago Woman’s “100 Women Who Make a Difference”. Muriel was chosen as the 1994 Chicago Park District of the Year for promoting Chicago’s youth through her “For Kids’ Sake” series.

In 1993, she won the Associated Press First Place Award for her work on the series “My Brother’s Keeper”. The Archdiocese of Chicago has twice honored her with the Cardinal’s Communicator Award. She was first honored in 1991 for her work on the series “Families in Touch – Growing up Drug-Free”. Additionally, she received her second Archdiocese recognition in 1993 again for hr reports “For Kids’ Sake”.
