Kate Thornton is an English journalist and television presenter, best known as the first presenter of The X Factor (2004–2006) and for hosting daytime shows including Loose Women (2009–2011) and This Morning (2009–2012). Journalism
Kate began her career at the Sunday Mirror in 1992 as an editorial assistant. She later became a pop music columnist for the Daily Mirror.
While in this role, Kate was instrumental in starting a media controversy over British music group Pulp. Prior to the release of the band’s single “Sorted for E’s & Wizz” in 1995, the Daily Mirror ran a front-page story titled “BAN THIS SICK STUNT” alongside an article by Kate Thornton that said the song was “pro- drugs”. and asked for the single to be banned.
The pre-release single had a booklet in which Kate claimed to have shown how to make an origami ‘wrap’ or package with the intention of “giving teen fans a DIY guide on how to hide illegal drugs.”
In an interview with the music journal NME the same day, Thornton was quoted to say, “We wanted to see the sleeve pulled up and we thought it was a crusade we would do alone. I think the cover is something that will touch our readers, although it may not touch yours.”
The band agreed to change the artwork, continuing to claim that Thornton had misinterpreted the meaning of the song’s cover and lyrics.
Vocalist Jarvis Cocker made a statement two days later clarifying that: “…’Sorted’ is not a pro-drug song… No part of the sleeve says you should put drugs in here, but I understand the confusion… I wouldn’t. I don’t want anything we do to drive people to drugs because drugs are not a solution or an answer to anything.
I don’t think anyone listening to Sorted would come away prejudging it had a pro-drug message. If they did, I would say they misinterpreted it.”

The Daily Mirror published Cocker’s statement, but he was unhappy that the front-page article written by Thornton contained the misquote “I don’t want the cover to get in the way of what the record is saying, which is an anti-drug message”, which he felt that he oversimplified the meaning of the song yet again.
He also criticized Thornton’s decision to contact the father of a victim of an ecstasy-related death for an answer. The Daily Mirror campaign continued publishing its readers’ responses to a poll to ban the song itself.
The single reached number two on the UK singles charts, and the track appeared on the band’s 1995 album Different Class.
In 1995, she became the youngest-ever editor of pop magazine Smash Hits at age 22, producing her first issue in February 1996 covering the breakup of boy band Take That. She left a year later, failing to prevent a further slump in the magazine’s sales.
In 1997, she became feature editor for the Sunday Times, a position she held until 2001, and also a contributing editor for Marie Claire magazine, a position she held until 2003.
TV
In taking on these new editorial roles, Kate began a second career in television. In February 1997, Thornton received her first job as a TV presenter on the ITV current affairs program Straight Up.
She was assigned to mount a photographic tribute with music to Princess Diana on the day of her death. In a March 2011 interview, Kate said: “…because it was a Sunday, the music library was closed and the only thing I had in my car, the only appropriate song was “Candle in the Wind” from the greatest hits of Elton John. ”
Colleagues attributed the subsequent airplay and then re-recording of the song to this event.
Thornton is quoted as having initially doubted it, but later came to accept the possibility: “I never dared assume for a minute that I was the link. But Nick Knowles [co-presenter on the show] convinced me that everything that came as a result of this was everything to me.”

Kate was the first presenter of the British series The X Factor. She hosted three series of shows from 2004 to 2006 before being replaced by Dermot O’Leary. She later anchored the ITV daytime series Loose Women in rotation with Andrea McLean.
