Biography of Christy McDonald
Christy McDonald is an Emmy Award-winning American journalist who has served as an anchor and reporter and has covered news in Detroit and Michigan for 25 years. For the past decade, she has been editor-in-chief and anchor for WTVS Detroit PBS One Detroit. She created the station’s flagship weekly politics and news program “MiWeek” in 2011.
The MiWeek show later evolved into “Obe Detroit” in 2017. McDonald took on a large role during the pandemic and helped create and anchor “One Detroit: Arts & Culture”. She also anchored special coverage for DPTV, including documentaries, live news events and the Mackinac Policy Conference.
Additionally, she has appeared numerous times over the years on PBS NewsHour and CNN reporting on Michigan politics and Detroit’s financial crisis. Talking about her education, she graduated from Michigan State University’s James Madison College with a degree in Political Philosophy.
She also led lively discussions at the Detroit Economic Club. Detroit Policy Conference, Mackinac Policy Conference, International Women’s Day events and BLM CEO Summit. In addition, she co-moderated government debates in 2015 and 2018. McDonald has also appeared on public radio WDET as a guest host/speaker, as well as a featured guest on the “Remarkable Women” radio show.
In addition to her work, she is a passionate supporter of charitable projects. She is an advocate for colorectal cancer awareness after her husband died of the disease in August 2020. She has also championed her late husband’s name with tennis scrambler fundraisers for an evening at Comerica Park. Recently, in 2022, she received the Barry Berman Memorial Inspiration Award from the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation for her work.
