Biography of Stephen Sackur
Stephen Sackur is an English journalist who currently presents HARDtalk on BBC World News and the BBC News Channel. He was also the main GTM Friday presenter on BBC World News and was the station’s foreign correspondent for over 15 years.
Born in Spilsby, Lincolnshire, England, he attended and graduated from Kind Edward VI Grammer School. He also attended Emmanuel College, where he earned a BA in history with honors. Thereafter, he joined Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government as a Henry Fellow.
In 1986, he started at the BBC as an intern and in 1990 was appointed one of the BBC’s foreign affairs correspondents. As a BBC radio correspondent, he reported on the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution in 1989. During the Gulf War, he was part of the BBC team covering the conflict. They also spent eight weeks as embedded journalists in the British Army.
Between 1997 and 2002, he was appointed the BBC’s Washington correspondent. In this position, he covered the Lewinsky scandal and the US. the presidential election in 2000. Since 2005, he has been the regular host of HARDtalk.
He received numerous awards during his career. He was nominated for “Speech Broadcaster of the Year” at the Sony Radio Awards in 2013 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Warwick.
