Kristen Clarke is an African-American Attorney General currently serving as an Assistant to the Division of Civil Rights at the United States Department of Justice, Washington DC, Baltimore area since May 2021. Previously, she was Chair and Executive Director of the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Washington DC In addition, she was also Chief of the Office of Civil Rights at the Attorney General of the State of New York.
Clarke was a member of Prep for Prep. She was awarded the 2017 Choate Rosemary Hall Alumni. However, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1997. At the institute, she was president of the Black Student Association. Furthermore, Kristen obtained a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2000. Afterwards, she served as an attorney and federal prosecutor in the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice.
Kristen was selected by President Joe Biden as the head of her current department on May 25, 2021 by nomination by 51 votes to 48. She is the first woman to lead the Civil Rights Division. However, Clarke was also a co-director of the political participation group NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. Clarke is also the first African-American female student body president at American University who fought racism in her case against Andrew Anglin by the United States District Court of the States of Columbia.
Clarke also appeared with Stacey Abrams in the documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy, where she handled legal arguments and advocated for the passage of the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. She also sued the US Postal Service over delayed ballots during the COVID pandemic. She also fought for LGBTQ, where she won an agreement with the Boy Scouts of America to end their policy of excluding openly gay adults from serving as leaders in organizations.
Furthermore, she received the 2010 Paul Robeson Distinguished Alumni Award issued by Columbia Law School. Clarke also received the National Black Law Students Association Alumni of the Year for 2010. In 2011, she was named Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Bar Association. Kristen also received the Best Brief award in 2012, issued by the National Association of Attorneys General.
However, in 2015, she was the rising star of the New York Law Journal. Clarke also received the Alumni Award issued by Choate Rosemary Hall in 2017. Additionally, she received the 2018 Louis L. Redding Lifetime Achievement Award issued by the Delaware Barrister Association. Lastly, she received the 2017 Thurgood Marshall Award issued by Quinnipiac Law School.
