
Biography of Rebecca Sugar
Rebecca Sugar is an American animator, screenwriter, director, songwriter, and producer. She is best known for creating Cartoon Network’s ‘Steven Universe’, which made her the network’s first female cartoon creator. Previously, Sugar worked as a storyboard artist and writer on the animated show ‘Adventure Time’ until 2013. She has also received seven Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.
Sugar was raised in Sligo Park Hills, where she attended Montgomery Blair High School and the Visual Arts Center at Albert Einstein High School. While in school, she won Montgomery County’s prestigious Ida F. Haimovicz Visual Arts Award. She also won first place for comics in the Individual Newspaper Writing and Editing Contest. Later, Rebecca enrolled in the New York School of Visual Arts. During her time at the School of Visual Arts, she wrote and directed an animated short film Single, on which she collaborated with Ian, who worked as an animation assistant. Furthermore, her brother acted as an assistant colorist.
Additionally, Rebecca provided background art for “nockFORCE,” an animated web series that Jones-Quartey launched on YouTube in 2007. Three years later, she published her first graphic novel, Pug Davis, featuring an astronaut dog and his Blouse gay helper. Sugar is also known for her graphic novel “Don’t Cry Over Me, I’m Already Dead”, a story about two brothers whose shared love of The Simpsons takes a tragic turn. She joined the Adventure Time team as a storyboard revisionist for the show’s first season. Sugar was later promoted to storyboard artist for the show’s second season. She started creating Steven Universe while still working for Adventure Time.
Rebecca continued working on Adventure Time until the show’s fifth season, when she left to focus on Steven Universe. In addition, she was the executive producer of Steven Universe, which premiered on November 4, 2013. The film was followed by an epilogue limited series titled Steven Universe Future, also with Sugar as an executive producer, which premiered in late 2019. 2018, Sugar was featured on Gallant’s 2018 R&B/Soul track TOOGOODTOBETRUE, along with Sufjan Stevens.
Two years later, Sugar narrated a video entitled Let My People Go, a video created by the organization Never Again Action. From 2020 to 2021, Sugar and her husband worked on a series of public service announcements with anti-racist messages. In the same year, she acted as an uncredited singer in a Christmas special based on the animated series “Amphibia”.
