2 Chainz Early Beginnings
2 Chainz happens to be the brain behind the formation of the group Playaz Circle. Playaz Circle is an acronym that stands for “Preparing Legal Assets for Years from A to Z”. He initiated this group when he was in College Park, Georgia in 1997; together with Earl Conyers, his high school boyfriend at the time. While Earl Conyers took the name “Dolla Boy”, Epps took the name “Titi Boy” as his nickname.
Earl and Epps were both introduced to Ludacris, their fellow rapper from Atlanta after he moved to their compartment in College Park when he was still a DJ. The release of the duo’s independent album, which they called United We Stand, United We Fall, paved the way for them when Ludacris began recording various songs with the group, and some of them were played on his radio station.
Later, Ludacris became one of the most successful and best-selling rappers in South America. After hearing about Playaz Circle, he urged them to join his newly formed record label Disturbing Tha Peace; an offshoot of the prestigious Def Jam Records label. 2 Chainz joined the label, although Conyers refused to be officially signed until his mother had recovered from her illness.
2 Chainz – The Name
Throughout 2 Chainz’s career, several people held the view that the pseudonym “Titi Boy” was intended to cloud the image of the female sex, which he rightly refused. In 2011, Epps later decided to change his name to 2 Chainz, and people felt comfortable with his name change. After the name change, he decided to drop a mixtape that he called T.R.U. REALigion. The mixtape made it to number 58 on the Billboard Top R and B / Hip-Hop album charts. Due to the great success of the mixtape, Epps was featured on several songs by renowned artists such as Nicki Minaj’s Beez in the Trap and Kanye West’s Mercy.
On 24 March, 2 Chainz drew the public’s attention to Based on a T.r.u. Story. This was his first studio album. On March 11th there was a widespread rumor that 2 Chainz had been signed to G.O.O.D Music, the record label of Kanye West. Epps later refuted this speculation. Based on T.R.U. The story was a huge success as the album sold over 147,000 copies in the first week, making it number one on the US Billboard 200. By September 23, 2012, the album had sold over 288 thousand copies in the United States.
Under Disturbing Tha Peace
