Erwin Lutzer is an American evangelical Christian speaker, broadcaster, and author famous as a former senior pastor at The Moody Church in Chicago, Illinois (1980-2016). On November 10, 2018, Lutzer’s television production won three regional Emmy Awards. His production was on A Call for Freedom, where he traced the Protestant Reformation from the time of Martin Luther to filming in Germany.
Erwin was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, and later became a born-again Christian when he was 14 years old. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Biblical Education from the Winnipeg Bible Institute (now Providence University College and Theological Seminary) in 1962.
From 1971 to 1977, he was the lead pastor of Edgewater Baptist Church in Chicago. He obtained his Master of Philosophy from Loyola University Chicago at the time. In 1967, Erwin received his Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. He then enrolled for the Ph.D. from Loyola. program to obtain a doctorate in philosophy.
He, however, did not finish his dissertation. Lutzer earned two honorary doctorates in the following years: an LL.D. from Simon Greenleaf School of Law and Doctor of Divinity at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary.
