Biography of Robert Tilton
Robert Tilton is an American televangelist and former pastor of Word of Faith Family Church. In 1991, at the height of his ministry, his infomercial-style program, Success-N-Life, aired in all 235 American television markets. It grossed nearly $80 million per year. Additionally, it has been described as “the fastest growing television ministry in America”.
He attended and graduated from Cooke County Junior College. Robert also attended Texas Technological University. According to his autobiographical materials, he had a conversion experience to evangelical Christianity.
He began his ministry in 1974. Tilton preached to small congregations and revivals throughout Texas and Oklahoma. His family settled in Dallas and built the Word of Faith Family Church. Faith Family Church was built in 1976. This church started a local television program then known as Daystar. His young church grew steadily. However, Daystar failed to expand beyond the Dallas area until Tilton traveled to Hawaii.
Upon his return in 1981, Tilton, with the help of a $1.3 million loan from Dallas banker Herman Beebe, revamped Daystar into a one-hour “religious infomercial” titled Success-N-Life. On Success-N-Life, he regularly taught that all of life’s trials are worth living. His message consisted primarily of impressing upon viewers the importance of making “vows.” His preferred vow was frequently emphasized in his broadcasts. When a person made a vow to Tilton, he preached that God would recognize the vow and reward the giver.
The program also featured “testimonies” from viewers who donated to his ministry and reportedly received miracles in return. A 1992 Dallas Morning News story noted that Tilton spent more than 84 percent of his show’s airtime on fundraising and promotions. This was more than the 22 percent of an average commercial television program. Some of his fundraising letters were written by Gene Ewing. Gene is the head of a multimillion-dollar marketing empire, writing donation letters for other televangelists such as W. V. Grant and Don Stewart.
As a result of his television success, the World of Faith Family Church grew into a megachurch. It had over 8,000 members at its peak. He also wrote several self-help books on financial success, including The Power to Create Wealth, God’s Laws of Success, How to Pay Your Bills Supernaturally, and other books. The books were republished in the late 1990s to be used as centerpieces for his 1997 infomercial series.
In 1991, ABC News conducted an investigation into Tilton. The investigation was assisted by Trinity Foundation president Ole Anthony and aired on ABC’s Primetime Live on November 21, 1991. His ministry was accused of throwing out prayer requests without reading them.
