James Span biography
James Spann is an Emmy Award-winning American meteorologist and podcast host based in Birmingham, Alabama. Currently works for WBMA-LD, ABC 33/40, ABC affiliate of Birmingham. Spann has worked in the field of journalism since 1978. He is also the host of the weekly WeatherBrains podcast, which he started in 2006.
In addition, James was invited to join WAPI (NBC 13) in Birmingham as the main weather anchor. At age 23, he started his new job the same week that Hurricane Frederic hit the coast of Mobile Bay. After a five-year stint on Channel 13, Spann moved to KDFW-4 in Dallas, Texas. He won the 1985 Katy Award for Best Meteorologist from the Dallas Press Club while there. In 1986, however, he resigned and moved to Alabama. Also, in Demopolis, Alabama, he co-owned a small AM-FM radio station with Dave Baird. In October 1989, he returned to television, this time as the lead meteorologist for Birmingham’s WBRC-TV. At the same time, he enrolled in the Mississippi State University in a meteorology program. James earned the NWA and AMS seals of approval upon graduation.

Spann is the founder of The Meteorological Factory, which provides weather data to industrial and commercial customers, as well as broadcasts weather forecasts to many radio stations. He was the 33rd individual in the United States to be designated a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist by the American Meteorological Society.
He was on TV for 10 am on April 8, 1998, during a tornado alert for western Jefferson County. An F5 tornado hit Oak Grove High School before 8pm. James spoke from a helicopter the next day about the warning and the destruction of the school. James hosted a severe-weather safety television series in 2004.
After finishing fifth grade at Elementary Verner, he transferred to Eastwood Junior High School. James was later transferred to Tuscaloosa High School, where he received his degree in 1974. James volunteered as an amateur radio operator while attending Tuscaloosa High School. During the 1973 Brent tornado and the 1974 Superoutbreak, he assisted in transmitting information. he passed to University of Alabama after high school. While still a student at the University of Alabama studying electrical engineering, James began working as a disc jockey at WTBC-AM in Tuscaloosa while still a student at the University of Alabama.

In 1973, he began his career as a radio broadcaster at WTBC radio in Tuscaloosa. He was assigned the night shift, while Dave Baird, a former ABC 33/40 anchor, was assigned the morning shift. After tornadoes hit Jasper, Alabama, in 1974, James volunteered for many hours. In the summer of 1978, he began his television career in 33/40 precursor WCFT in Tuscaloosa, the “33” in 33/40. James began working for the WSFA in Montgomery in late 1978 as a weekend sports anchor and part-time meteorologist.
After working as an afternoon car announcer at WHHY-FM (“Y102”) in Montgomery during the summer of 1979, James was appointed chief meteorologist at WAPI-TV in Birmingham, despite having no official weather training. He became one of Montgomery’s youngest meteorologists at age 23. When Channel 13 was sold to The Times Mirror and renamed WVTM-TV in 1980, James impressed his new supervisors enough to be transferred to KDFW, a sister station to Dallas, in 1984. In 1985, the Dallas Press Club named him the Metroplex’s top meteorologist, beating strong competitors such as KXAS-TV’s Harold Taft and WFAA-TV’s Troy Dungan.

After WBRC was purchased by News Corporation in 1996, James left the station and began to abandon his longtime affiliation with ABC to join Fox. As James was dissatisfied with Fox’s diet of reality shows and other programming, he joined some of his former WBRC co-workers on ABC 33/40, founded by the merger of WCFT and Anniston’s WJSU-TV with a new low power repeater in Birmingham. WBRC had been replaced as Birmingham’s ABC affiliate by the newly created station. Since then, James has worked for ABC 33/40.
