Mari Payton biography
Mari Payton is an American journalist who currently works as a senior investigative reporter at NBC7. She is also an anchor for Weekend News and her stories have promoted local, state and federal investigations. Additionally, she is a contributor to the award-winning NBC7 Insight Investigative podcast.
Over the course of her career, she has received numerous awards, including Emmy awards for her investigative stories and her live reporting. She has also received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Press Club. Additionally, she won the Associated Press Award for an article on the obesity epidemic in the state of Mississippi.
Prior to working in San Diego, she worked at WLBT, the NBC affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi. While there, she was sent to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where she weathered the storm and covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. After her education, she was a Renaissance Scholar and graduated from Annenberg School of Communication.
She is currently a member of the Association of Asian American Journalists and Investigative Reporters and Editors. When she’s off duty, she loves spending time with her two young children and trying new restaurants.
