Charlie Sykes is an American political commentator currently editor-in-chief of The Bulwark website. Charles Jay Sykes hosted a conservative talk show at the WTMJ in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Sykes enrolled in University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee after graduating Nicolet College, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1975 with a BA in English. At age 18, while in Milwaukee, Sykes converted to Roman Catholicism.

He began his career as a journalist for a year at The Northeast Post weekly in West Allis, Wisconsin, in 1975. Sykes joined The Milwaukee Journal in 1976, beginning with story coverage in the North Shore suburbs. Sykes came to Cleveland as a staff writer for Cleveland Magazine after seven years working in the Milwaukee area. At the end of the year, however, the magazine went bankrupt. In 1983, he returned to Milwaukee as editor-in-chief of Milwaukee Magazine and moved in January 1984 to become editor-in-chief. He has written Milwaukee Magazine profiles, investigative posts, and commentary.
Likewise, Sykes was a published author, primarily with regard to education. In 1988, he debuted with Profscam: Teachers and the Decline of Higher Education, inspired by the essay published posthumously in October 1985 by his father. As Mark Belling’s replacement presenter at WISN in Milwaukee, Sykes began hosting radio shows in 1989. In 1992, he had his own show on WISN. Later, within a year, he hopped into the WTMJ and anchored a midday show there until December 19, 2016.
The WTMJ settled a $5,000 defamation case with Spanish Journal editor Robert Miranda against Sykes on July 26, 2005, in a November 2004 blog post by Sykes alleging that Miranda was in 1991. In response to a “pro-American” rally at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he organized a demonstration that turned aggressive, details Sykes later withdrew. He was not in favor of Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. The move against him and the decision to vote in writing for independent environmentalist candidate Evan McMullin. Sykes revealed in October 2016 that, for undisclosed personal reasons, he had chosen in late 2015 to leave his radio show.
Sykes wrote an op-ed in the New York Times in December 2016, claiming that during the referendum, the conservative movement had lost its way. Over time, all the usual indicators were overturned, the referees discredited, and we managed to completely delegitimize the media.
From January to April 2017, Sykes was part of the rotating ensemble of hosts on Indivisible, a talk show broadcast in New York on WNYC public radio, among others, along with Brian Lehrer of WNYC and Kerri Miller of Minnesota Public Radio. The program analyzed the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s new administration and addressed them. Sykes became the new host of The Daily Regular, the resurrected podcast from Weekly Standard Magazine, in February 2018.
