Joel David Moore is an American actor and director famous for his role as Dr. Norm Spellman in Avatar, a role he reprized in the film’s sequels, Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) and the upcoming Avatar 3 (2024). He has also starred in several music videos and directed films with his directorial debut in the psychological thriller Spiral, followed by the drama Youth in Oregon.
Born in Portland, he studied acting in college before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a film career. His first major role was as Owen Dittman in the 2004 comedy Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story. He then had roles in Grandma’s Boy (2006), Terry Zwigoff’s Art School Confidential and Hatchet.
In 2008, he was cast in the supporting role of Dr. Norm Spellman in Avatar, and the same year, he was cast as intern Colin Fisher in Bones. He also had a supporting role in Beyond a Reasonable Doubt, a remake of the 1956 film of the same name. Furthermore, he starred opposite Katy Perry in the music video “Waking Up in Vegas”.
