Biography of Cliff Curtis
Cliff Curtis is a New Zealand actor who co-owns New Zealand independent production company Whenua Films. His film credits include Once Were Warriors, Three Kings, The Dark Horse and Doctor Sleep (2019). For his role in The Dark Horse, he won the Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actor. Curtis portrayed Travis Manawa in the 2015-2017 series Fear the Walking Dead.
Born in Rotorua, Curtis studied mau rākau, a traditional Māori of taiaha wrestling that characterized his skills as a kapa haka performer. He later performed as a breakdancer and competitively in rock ‘n’ roll dance competitions. For his education, he attended Edmund Rice College and later graduated from Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School with a Diploma in Acting.
He began acting in amateur productions of musicals Fiddler on the Roof and Man of La Mancha. Her first film role was a small role in Jane Campion’s Academy Award-nominated film The Piano. He came to attention in the movie Once Were Warriors. In 2000, he starred as Billy Williams in Jubilee.
Later in 2004, he formed the independent film production company Whenua with producer Ainsley Gardiner. From the beginning, the company’s main objective has been to support the growth of New Zealand’s native film scene and support local short films. The company produced several short films under the new banner, most notably Two Cars, One night.
Some of his recent film credits include Fear the Walking Dead, where he was cast as Travis Manawa, Avatar: The Way of Water, where he was cast as Tonowari, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, where he was cast as Jonah Hobbs. He was also cast as daredevil flight doctor Reuben in the NBC drama Trauma.
