Tommy Lee Sparta Biography
Leroy Russell Junior, popularly known by his stage names Tommy Lee Sparta, is a Jamaican dancehall artist from the Montego Bay flankers. He rose to fame as a member of Adidjahiem Records and the associated Portmore Empire team under the leadership of Vybz Kartel. He has been a controversial figure in dancehall due to his self-described “Gothic Dancehall” style, which often features dark, Satanism-inspired themes.
Tommy attended Anchovy High School where he performed at many meetings there. He decided to pursue his professional career after being motivated by his fans. After that he recorded his first song Spartan Story at Snipa studios in Flankers. He became a fixture in the studio recording several tracks like Sparta Out At Night, Mama Mi Love You and Warn Dem. The songs became well known and later after he became a prominent performer in concerts across western Jamaica.
Vybz Kartel noticed Tommy’s talent during a performance in Montego Bay. There he offered him the opportunity to join his crew, but he declined the offer for some time. In March 2010 he accepted the offer and became an official member of the Portmore Empire (Gaza). He recorded his first songs under the teacher’s guidance: Holding Out The Pressure on the Gangsta City Riddim, Gypsy on the Teeza riddim and Money make Friends. His first major performance was at Reggae Sumfest 2011 alongside headliner Vybz Kartel and other members from Gaza.
The song “Some Bwoy” reached #1 on the Jamaica charts, as well as on Pree Dis and Entertainment Report in 2011. The following year, he was recognized locally and internationally, making him Second City’s first full-length dancehall artist, Montego Bay, to headline the International Reggae Sumfest show and the Sting music festival in Portmore. Also, Tommy made his second mark with, Psycho shooting straight to the top of the charts. Olympic fever persuaded Sparta to re-record their top two spots in honor of Jamaica’s Olympic team and track superstar Usain Bolt. The remixes attracted immense attention and became unofficial soundtracks for Team Jamaica fans.
In addition, Lee was featured on a song called Evil by Bonez MC and RAF Camora which peaked at number 51 in the German charts. In 2018, he entered the Billboard top 10 reggae album charts at number 9 with his new creator EP. Furthermore, Lee Sparta was nominated in 2020 for the IRAWMA international reggae and music award in the category of best dancehall stage artist. Some of Tommy’s latest hit songs are Power Struggle, Lord Luci, Blessings, Rich Badness, Negative Vibes, Tattoo, and Breeder. Furthermore, Leroy has accumulated 1 million subscribers on his YouTube Vevo channel as of September 2021 thanks to his large cult following, he has stated his appreciation for the feat on his Instagram account.
