Biography of Saira Anwer
Saira Anwer is a two-time Emmy Award-nominated American journalist currently working as an anchor and reporter at WPLG, Local 10 News, Miami, Florida. Anwer has received Emmy nominations for her coverage of Janesville, Wisconsin, and a story about teachers at a unique school within a children’s hospital. Additionally, she has also received an award from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for her excellence in live reporting.
Anwer interned at WPSDLocal 6 for a period of two months before moving to WQAD-TV. She interned at WQAD-TV for 3 months until July 2011. Saira left the station and joined 8th Grade Language Arts/TFA Corps Member, Dallas, Fort Worth Area, as a teacher. She taught for a period of two years and one month until June 2014.
Saira began her career in Minot, North Dakota at KMOT Gray Television as a primetime anchor and reporter for the 6:00 and 10:00 p.m. newscasts. She reported on the oil spill and political issues on North Dakota’s Native American reservations. Additionally, she established and hosted a weekly medical segment. Anwer left the station in January 2016. She immediately joined WMTV NBC 15, Madison, Wisconsin as a reporter and anchor. Saira anchored weekend evening newscasts on NBC 15 and CW News from July 9 until July 2018. She then joined WPLG as a TV news reporter, covering breaking news throughout South Florida.
Anwer is happy to be in South Florida and loves experiencing the rich diversity, culture, as well as delicious food. Additionally, she is a fan of the SoFlo weather and does not miss the brutally cold Midwest winters. In Saira’s free time, she enjoys tennis, musical theater, reading, and watching cooking shows.
Anwer attended Galesburg High School and graduated in 2008. She later joined the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and a minor in Spanish. Saira is a proud member of the Delta Zeta sorority. Immediately after graduation, she joined the Teach For America corps and spent a two-year stint teaching language arts and reading to at-risk eighth graders in Dallas.
