Akbar Gbajabiamila is an American journalist and former NFL football player who currently works as a commentator on the television series American Ninja Warrior on NBC and a sports analyst for the NFL Network. He is also a co-host of The Talk on CBS. Akbar is also a writer and released his first book, Everyone Can Be a Ninja, on May 7, 2019.
He attended Crenshaw High School in South Los Angeles where he was a star basketball player. Akbar and his teammates won back-to-back state and city championships in 1996 and 1997. However, he moved to football during his senior year.
He has received scholarship offers as a senior from Oregon University, University of California, Berkeley, San Diego State and many other universities. In the end, he chose to go to San Diego State University where his older brother was. He majored in communication and new media studies.
Before starting his professional career, he played college football at San Diego State University. Akbar was signed by the Oakland Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2003. As a free agent, he also played for the San Diego Chargers and Miami Dolphins.
With his playing career over, he turned his focus to broadcasting in addition to his philanthropic work. He started out serving as an analyst for the Mtn. Network and CBS Sports Network for two years. During this period, Akbar also took voice and acting lessons.
He joined the NFL Network as a cast member of NFL Fantasy Live hosts in 2012. In 2013, he became co-host alongside Matt Iseman for American Ninja Warrior. It was announced on September 2, 2021 that he would be joining The Talk as a permanent co-host.
