Alana Austin biography
Alana Austin is a renowned American journalist who currently works as a multimedia journalist at 13 ABC. Austin joined 13 ABC News in August 2017 after spending three years covering national and state politics in Richmond, Virginia on Gray TV’s WVIR-TV.
Alana graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and psychology. In addition, she completed Honors Carolina and Public Service Scholars programs and studied at Freie Universität through InternXchange.
As the only full-time television correspondent on the State Capitol, Alana reported on the Virginia General Assembly’s legislative sessions and on political, governmental, legal and socio-economic issues under Governor Terry McAuliffe’s administration.
At the same time, Austin covered the 2016 presidential and primary elections, focusing on Vice Presidential candidate and Virginia Senator Tim Kaine.
During her time on the network, Alana broke news about the loss of coverage of the Affordable Care Act for 250,000 Virginians, the federal conviction for corruption and the appeal of former Governor Bob McDonnell. Others included the US Senate race between incumbent Mark Warner and opponent Ed Gillespie and the Virginia Republicans’ legal challenge to the mass restoration of McAuliffe’s rights executive order.
Alana also anchored and produced newscasts regularly at a station in Charlottesville. This was after serving as a general reporter in Waynesboro and as a cameraman in Lynchburg and Danville, Virginia.
During her college years, Alana reported for the Daily Tar Heel and Carolina Week, student-run publications. Austin has received various journalism internships as an investigative researcher at a TV station in Raleigh/Durham, a reporter/translator at Deutsche Presse Agentur (German Press Agency) in Washington, and intern at ZDF (German TV) in Berlin.
