Dame Anna Wintour is a British journalist based in New York City who has served as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue since 1988 and Global Content Director of Condé Nast since 2020. Wintour is also Artistic Director of Condé Nast and Global Editorial Director of Vogue

Wintour was born and raised in London, England. She attended the independent North London Collegiate School. However, she dropped out of North London Collegiate in 1966 and four years later became fashion assistant for Harper’s & Queen magazine. She has also served as an editor for British Vogue and as an editor for House & Garden. Anna later moved to New York with her boyfriend, freelance journalist Jon Bradshaw. In New York, she became a junior fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar in New York in 1975.

While there, Wintour worked for nine months and was fired, and then hired as the first position as a fashion editor, at Viva, a women’s magazine for adults. In 1980, she replaced Elsa Klensch as the fashion editor of a new women’s magazine called Savvy. A year later, Dame became New York’s fashion editor. Seven years later, Wintour replaced Grace Mirabella as editor-in-chief of American Vogue. The move comes three years after the US launch of French magazine Elle, which has consistently threatened to reduce Vogue’s circulation and advertising revenue.

As editor-in-chief of Vogue, Anna began featuring prominent women in her Vogue, including actresses Nicole Kidman and politician Hillary Clinton, rather than exclusively using models. Wintour also ran Condé Nast Publications, where she helped launch several spin-offs, Teen Vogue, Vogue Living and Men’s Vogue. The most notable was Teen Vogue, which ran more pages of ads and earned more advertiser revenue than Elle Girl and Cosmo Girl. Additionally, Men’s Vogue was one of the first issues in Condé Nast history to add 164 pages of ads that year. For her work, Wintour was named “Editor of the Year” for this brand expansion by AdAge.
