Ashton Sanders biography
Ashton Sanders is an American actor who is best known for his portrayal of the teenager Chiron in the Oscar-winning film Moonlight (2016). Born in Carson, California, Sanders attended Grand Arts High School in downtown Los Angeles.
He graduated from Grand Arts High School in 2013 and went on to study for a Bachelor of Fine Arts at The Theater School at DePaul University. However, he left after three years in 2016 to focus on his acting career.
Most notably, he made his film debut in The Retrieval, directed by Chris Eska. On March 11, 2013, the film had its world premiere at South by Southwest. The Retrieval was released in a limited release on April 2, 2014, by Variance Films.
In 2015, he had a small role in Straight Outta Compton, and in 2016, he appeared in an episode of Refinery29’s web series The Skinny. In the same year, he appeared in the drama film Moonlight, directed by Barry Jenkins. The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2016. It began a limited run on October 21, 2016, on A24.

The film Moonlight received massive critical acclaim as well as dozens of accolades, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture-Drama. Furthermore, the film won three Oscars for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. Ashton’s role was praised by critics; Benjamin Lee of The Guardian called her performance “powerful”.
Sanders went on to co-star in The Equalizer 2, a sequel to the hit action film The Equalizer, alongside Denzel Washington. In 2019, he starred in the sci-fi thriller Captive State alongside John Goodman and Vera Farmiga. Sanders also played the lead role in the HBO adaptation of Native Son.
In November 2020, he is set to star in The Things They Carried, a Vietnam war film. Recently, in September 2021, he was cast as Bobby Brown in I Wanna Dance with Somebody, a Whitney Houston biopic.
