Barbara Starr is an American journalist who currently serves as CNN’s Pentagon correspondent, based in Washington, D.C. Having graduated from California State University, Northridge with a degree in journalism, Barbara took a job as a correspondent for Business Week magazine from 1979 to 1988.
She later worked for the news magazine Jane’s Defence Weekly from 1988 to 1997 covering security and defense policy before joining ABC News as a producer. At ABC, she covered the Pentagon and won an Emmy Award as a result. In 2001, she joined CNN as the chief Pentagon correspondent, covering national security issues including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Throughout her career, she has received criticism for her reporting, and has been called a “mouthpiece for the Pentagon.” MSBC reporter Chris Hayes conducted a segment in June 2013 where he argued that publishing information leaked by Barbara was at least as potentially damaging to national security as that published by The Guardian’s Glenn Greenwald.
Additionally, she received criticism from Kenyans through a Twitter hashtag that trended for several hours on the Internet when she called Kenya a “hotbed of terror” while President Obama was addressing the East African country in July 2015. With this statement, Barbara was referring to the security threat posed by Al-Shabaab militants at the time.
