Bernie Sanders’ father and his maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia. His father, Ben Yehuda Sanders, came to the USA at the age of 17 and became a paint salesman. His mother, Dorothy Sanders, was born in New York City.
Bernie was born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York City. He completed his primary school education at P.S. 197 in Brooklyn and then attended James Madison High School. During his time at both schools, he participated in sports activities. Sanders helped his elementary school basketball team win a district championship and was captain of his high school’s track and field team, where he finished third in the New York City Indoor One Mile Race.
A series of tragic events sparked Bernie Sanders’ interest in politics. This happened when Adolf Hitler’s Holocaust cost the lives of 6 million Jews, including most of his Jewish relatives in then German-occupied Poland. From then on he understood the sensitivity and power of the political office.

He took and lost his first attempt at politics in high school. It was an election for the presidency of the student body. In 1964 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Chicago. Before that, he had also spent a year at Brooklyn College. Bernie Sanders says he was never challenged by the classroom. Most of his education and inspiration came from his presence in the community.
During his school years, he was a member of the Socialist Youth League and was active in the civil rights movement and the Congress for Racial Equality. Between 1964 and 1971 Bernie Sanders wore numerous hats and titles. At various times he worked as a carpenter, psychiatric assistant, filmmaker, teacher, and freelance writer.
Sanders’ political election career began in 1971 with the Liberation Union Party, from which he left in October 1977. Since then he has held several electoral positions. The earliest was the mayor of Vermont from April 1981 to April 1989.
After a two-year absence from politics as a professor, Bernie Sanders became the first independent since 1950 to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. He held this office until 2007 when he made it to the Senate after a faction meeting with the Democratic Party. He received support from many political heavyweights such as then-Senator Barack Obama.
On April 30, 2015, he announced his plan to run for President of the United States under the Democratic Party banner. Despite a very promising campaign and enthusiastic supporters, he lost the Democratic primary to former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He coped well with his loss and put his weight behind her by formally supporting her on July 12, 2016.
Sanders is the only presidential candidate in history to be invited to the Vatican to discuss moral, economic, and environmental issues.

Bernie Sanders has an older brother, Larry Sanders, born on 25 April 1935, and is the Green Party’s health spokesman. Her mother and father died in 1959 and 1962 respectively. Bernie has been married to Jane O’Meara Driscoll since 1988. Jane, who became president of Burlington College in Vermont, came into the relationship with three children.
