Bill O’Brien Bio
Bill O’Brien was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on October 23, 1969, as William James O’Brien, son of John O’Brien and Anne Murphy O’Brien. He was born into a football family, as both, his father and grandfather played the game.

It is said that Bill and his immediately older brother Tom grew up playing soccer. After graduating from St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Bill attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he was a defensive player and linebacker for the Brown Bears from 1990 to 1992.
Bill is the youngest of his three brothers, who all studied at Brown University.
The first experience Bill O’Brien had as a coach was with his alma mater, the Brown Bears. There he worked as a tight-end and inside linebacker between 1993 and 1994. In the following three seasons (1995-1997), Bill O’Brien remained with Georgia Tech as an offensive graduate assistant. From 1998 to the 2000 season, he was the coach of the running backs for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
In 2002 Bill O’Brien was hired as offensive coordinator of Notre Dame. He later moved to the University of Maryland, where he was the coach of the running backs for two seasons. He then became an offensive coordinator for the Blue Devils at Duke University between 2005 and 2006.
NFL Coaching Career
The New England Patriots hired Bill on 27 February 2007 as an offensive assistant, marking the beginning of his career as an NFL coach. On February 21, 2008, he was promoted to Wide-Receiver Coach. At the end of the 2008 season, he was appointed an offensive player and quarterback coach. Another promotion came through for him in 2011, he was appointed offensive coordinator.
Sometime in January 2012, Bill O’Brien was officially introduced as Penn State’s 15th head coach. He replaced Joe Paterno, his Brown Co graduate, but he only served in that capacity for about two seasons.
The Cleveland Browns and the Philadelphia Eagles took Bill O’Brien on in January 2013 with an offer to hire him as head coach, but Bill’s heart was still with Penn State when he declared that he had made a commitment to the team that he would keep. However, after Gary Kubiak was fired from the Houston Texans, it was reported that Bill was thinking about returning to the NFL.
The discussion about the position of a new leader was initiated by the Texans on December 29, 2013. On January 2, 2014, Bill was officially introduced as head coach of the Texans. In his first season as head coach, he and his team barely missed the playoffs. The next season was fulfilling but disappointing. While the Texans won the AFC South title, they were humiliated by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Bill O’Brien prepared for his third season with the team, they won the AFC South title again but were beaten by the New England Patriots who became Super Bowl champions. Bill’s fourth season with the team is his worst, but that didn’t stop him from extending his contract by four years.
