Billy Horschel Biography

Billy Horschel is an American professional golfer currently playing on the PGA Tour. In September 2021, Horchel won the BMW PGA Championship by hitting a final round 65, making it his second European Tour win.

Horschel was born in Grant, Florida and raised there. He went to Bayside High School in nearby Palm Bay. He obtained an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Florida, Gainesville, where he competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition for Coach Buddy Alexander’s men’s golf team, Florida Gators, from 2006 to 2009.

Billy is a four-time All-American, including three first-team selections, as well as the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Player of the Year in 2007 and 2009. Horschel was a PING Southeast All-Region pick in 2008. In 2009, he earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from the University of Florida.

He represented the United States in the Palmer Cup twice, in 2007 and 2008, scoring 4.5 points each time. He has a 3-1 record with the 2007 Walker Cup winning team.

Horschel won the individual medalist award at the 2006 US Amateur, scoring two days out of 138 (60-78.5) at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. Horschel began his professional career in 2009. In December 2009, he qualified for the 2010 PGA Tour through qualifying school. Horschel was limited to four PGA Tour events that year due to a wrist injury, and he didn’t make the cut in any of them. In December 2010, he retrieved his Tour Card through qualifying school to supplement his medical extension if he didn’t earn enough to secure his Tour Card.

In February 2011, he made the cut at the Mayakoba Golf Classic, his first PGA Tour appearance in eleven years, finishing in T13. In late April 2013, Horschel led the PGA Tour in consecutive cuts made with twenty-three, dating back to FedEx St. Jude Classic in June 2012. That streak ended when he lost the cut at The Players Championship, the tournament he played in after his victory.

Horschel and Phil Mickelson were tied for first during half of the 2013 US Open. He was one of only two under-par players after the second round of his first major as a pro, hitting all 18 of Merion’s greens in regulation. He fired 72-74 rounds over the weekend to finish the tournament five-over-par, four strokes behind eventual winner Justin Rose.

Horschel finished T4 in his first major as a professional, moving up to 34th in the world and fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. He won the 2014 BMW Championship for the second time and rose to 23rd in the world rankings. Additionally, Billy won The Tour Championship and with it the FedEx Cup the following week at East Lake Golf Club. Horschel is now 14th in the OWGR after his win.

Horschel became a father for the first time just two days after winning the Tour Championship and FedEx Cup. He defeated Jason Day in a playoff in May 2017 to beat AT&T Byron Nelson. Horschel and his playing partner Scott Piercy won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April 2018.

Horschel won the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in March 2021, defeating Scottie Scheffler in Finals 2 and 1. This was his first victory in a World Golf Championship. Later, in September 2021, he won the BMW PGA Championship with a final round 65. It was his second European Tour win.
