Bob Corker is an American-born businessman who is primarily involved in real estate development. He is also a politician and took office as Junior Senator of the State of Tennessee in January 2007 as a member of the Republican Party. He was re-elected for a second term in 2012 and has been Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee since January 2015.
Corker announced in September 2017 that his term as a senator would be limited to only two terms, as he would not run for re-election in 2018. Before being elected Senator, he served one term as Mayor of Chattanooga and also served as Tennessee State Commissioner for Finance and Administration.

Robert Phillips Corker Jr. was born on August 24, 1952, the son of Jean and Robert Phillips Corker in the town of Orangeburg, South Carolina, where he spent the first ten years of his life. His family finally moved to Tennessee when he was 11 years old. He is the great-great-grandson of Stephen A. Corker, a former U.S. Congressman who represented the State of Georgia.
Bob Corker attended Chattanooga High School and graduated in 1970. In 1974, he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In his early twenties, he participated in a missionary trip to Haiti, which motivated him to become more actively involved in his own community. Upon returning from the mission, he helped found the Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, a non-profit organization that provides low-interest housing loans.
After graduating from college, Corker got a job as a construction worker, and a few years later he was able to start his first construction company, Bencor, in 1978. The company grew by leaps and bounds in the following years and he sold it in 1990. Even after he became involved in politics, Corker maintained his thriving real estate business. In January 1995, the then Governor of Tennessee, Don Sundquist, appointed Corker as State Commissioner for Finance and Administration, a position he held until July 1996. He held his next political office between 2001 and 2005 as Mayor of Chattanooga. Corker ran for the U.S. Senate election in 2006 under the Republican Party, and this time he finally defeated his Democratic opponent Harold Ford Jr. in the general election.
He was sworn in on January 4, 2007, and was the only non-ruling Republican to be elected senator in the 110th Congress. Congress as a senator.
