Byju Raveendran Biography

Byju Raveendran is a famous Indian businessman, investor and educator. He is the co-founder of the Byju app. His app is the first startup in Asia to be funded by Mark Zuckerberg and his wife’s foundation, The Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. Raveendran has also received many awards, including the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

He was born and raised in Azhikode, Kannur, Kerala, India. He attended high school in a Malayalam school and later enrolled in the Government College of Engineering. There he graduated with a Bachelor of Technology. After that, he was hired by the multinational shipping company where he worked as a service engineer.

Raveendran also helped students study for the CAT exam during the vacation period. In 2007, he founded the test prep business called Byju’s Classes. The program grew day by day and finally into a stadium-sized class. He also co-founded Byju’s app along with his wife, Divya Gokulnath, whom he met when she was a student in his exam preparation class.

His popularity was growing by the day and, there was a time when he was having a class of around 20,000 students in different states like Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai and Pune. Due to the growing number of students, he started recording his lectures in 2009 and made them available to students in 45 cities. The app he founded is called Think & Learn, which aimed to create educational content for students. In 2015, Byju’s account and iOS app had over 5.5 million downloads with over 2.5 million subscribers.

At the end of the following year, Mark Zuckerberg and his Priscilla Chan organization – The Chan-Zuckerberg invested funds of $50 million in Raveendran’s company. Subsequently, the company became the first startup in Asia to be funded by the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. In July 2019, “The Learning App” became the official shirt sponsor of the Indian cricket team. That same year, Byju won the Manorama News Newsmaker award.

Furthermore, he also graced the cover of Forbes India magazine in 2017. Furthermore, Raveendran also received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. In 2021, he contracted with Indian test preparation provider Aakash Educational Services Ltd. for nearly $1 billion. He later invested $400 million in BYJU’S in a personal capacity to further increase his stake in the company.
