Carol Leonnig is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who has worked as an investigative writer for The Washington Post since 2000. For her reporting on security breaches and irregularities within the Secret Service, Leonning received a Pulitzer Prize in 2015. She was also part of a Post team that won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for exposing the US government’s covert and widespread surveillance of Americans thanks to Edward Snowden’s leaks.
Carol has also won the George Polk Award for investigative reporting three times. She covers the presidency of Donald Trump as well as Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Leonnig also appears on NBC News and MSNBC as a contributor.
Carol is from Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in Prince George County. She received a bachelor’s degree from Bryn Mawr High School in 1987.
Leonnig began her career at The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1989. She went on to work as a staff writer at The Charlotte Observer, where she initially covered local government, then the state legislature, and then became the paper’s Washington correspondent.

She was the lead reporter on several investigative projects during her time at The Observer, including one involving the use of federal funds from Bank of America to demolish low-income housing near its corporate headquarters and another revealing that Governor Jim Hunt personally directed state funds to be used to build a large bridge in his rural hometown. After the story about her involvement was exposed, Hunt apologized and stopped the project.
In a series of investigations published in 2011, Leonnig and his Post colleague Joe Stephens showed how the Obama administration pressured Solyndra, a solar panel maker whose top investors were linked to a large Obama fundraiser, to secure a federal loan of $535 million. His accounts were the first to show how White House advisers to senior White House advisers pressured administrative and budgetary officials to accept the Solyndra loan in time for a press conference that planned to reveal the funds to Vice President Biden.
