Chad Kroeger was born Chad Robert Turton on November 15, 1974, in Hanna Alberta. His maternal grandfather Henry Kroeger was born in Moscow to a Mennonite family with Prussian roots. When Chad was two years old his father left so he adopted his mother’s maiden name Kroeger.

He picked up guitar playing at the age of 13. His teenage years were challenging; he ended up in juvenile detention after breaking into his junior high school.

In the early 1990s, Chad Kroeger started a grunge cover band called Village Idiot alongside his cousin Brandon Kroeger and future Nickelback members Mike Kroeger (his brother) on bass and Ryan Peake as the singer. In 1995, they officially formed Nickelback a band that has since achieved great success through recordings and tours spanning over two decades.

In 2001, Chad Kroeger launched another band called The Suits XL featuring Sam Loubier-Demers and Yohann Gosselin on vocals and guitars, Patrick Paquet on drums, Felix-Antoine Berube on keyboards, and Oliver Roy de Belleval as another singer. The following year he co-founded 604 Records based in Vancouver. In 2006, The Suits XL released an album under this label and received a nomination for a Canadian Indie Award in 2007.

Kroeger also ventured into producing music for bands like Default Theory of a Deadman and Bo Bice.

Their honeymoon took place in Portofino Italy. Their marriage hit rough waters in September 2014 with media speculating about their separation which Lavigne confirmed via Instagram on September 2, 2015.
