After Chris Christie, the Republicans lost the state to the Democratic candidate, Phil Murphy, who defeated Kim Guadagno. This loss is said to be due to the failure of Christie. Although Guadagno tried to distance the then governor from the election campaign, he did little because the governor had already lost popularity.

He left office with the worst approval rate of all US governors in the last 20 years, with only 17% approval for his office.
