Smith performed at a talent contest at the Frontier Ranch country music park near Columbus, Ohio. She won the contest and five silver dollars. Furthermore, Bill Anderson, who is a country artist, listened to Smith’s performance and was impressed by her voice.

In 1979, Smith entered semi-retirement. However, Smith collaborated with Marty Stuart in the 1990s, and this led to her returning to the industry.
