Dale Hansen biography

Dale Hansen is an American sportscaster who previously worked as a weekday sports anchor during the 10pm news at ABC’s Dallas affiliate, WFAA. Additionally, Dale hosted the Dale Hansen Sports Special on Sundays at 10:35 pm, consistently one of the top-rated local shows in Dallas-Fort Worth. His segment won over 300,000 people.

Hansen served in Newton, Iowa as a radio disc jockey and operations manager at KCOB, covering the Newton Cardinals and Newton Nite Hawks. He later moved to Knoxville, Iowa and joined KNIA radio as a news director. Soon after, he moved to Saint Cloud, Minnesota to work at KCLD radio. This gave him the chance to work closer to his hometown of Logan, Iowa, eventually joining the radio station he grew up listening to, KOIL in Omaha, Nebraska.

Dale got his first job in Dallas at KDFW, which at the time was a CBS affiliate in Dallas. He then left the station and joined the WFAA in 1983. At that time, Hansen was at 10pm and legendary anchor Verne Lundquist at 6pm, so the WFAA deemed them the “best sportscaster in Texas”.

In 1987, Dale was honored with the George Foster Peabody Award for Distinguished Journalism. That same year, he won the DuPont-Columbia Award for his contribution to research into the SMU football program. Subsequently, the NCAA banned the SMU from fielding a football program in 1987.

Hansen is the only local broadcaster to have received the Radio Television Digital News Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received in 2019. He has also been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Ellen Degeneres Show.
