Danai Gurira is a famous Zimbabwean-American actress and celebrity who rose to fame for portraying Michonne on AMC’s The Walking Dead and starring in Marvel’s Black Panther film series. She played Okoye in the first Black Panther movie of 2018 and the recently released Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Gurira’s other famous roles are in movies and TV series like Restless City, Law & Order, Mother of George and Ghost Town among others.
Gurira was born and raised in the northern suburbs of Grinnell, Iowa, USA. She grew up as the daughter of a university librarian and a tenured professor who moved from Zimbabwe and settled in the United States in 1964. Danai is also the youngest daughter among her three siblings. She finished high school at Dominican Convent High School. From there, Gurira joined Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She then received her Master of Fine Arts degree from the Tisch School of the Arts.
Dani began her career as a creative in the film industry, teaching drama and acting in Liberia and her native Zimbabwe. Gradually, Danai began writing plays to utilize her acting skills. Skits of hers have mostly centered on empowering strong women that she identifies with in her life. Gurira was then employed by the Yale Repertory Theater and the royal court as a playwright.
After a few years, Danai decided to start her film and television career by starring in a 2007 drama called The Visitor. Her role in the film was very well received. She even won the Method Fest Independent Film festival award for Best Supporting Actress. Danai then made two appearances in Ghost Town, Restless City and Law & Order, which catapulted her career as a Hollywood actress. She is now set to star in her own show alongside her The Walking Dead co-star Andrew Lincoln.
