David Doebler is the president and general manager of NBC 5 WMAQ in Chicago, which is owned by NBC. Since 2013, he has been an employee of the station. He, however, announced in June that he would step down as president and general manager of NBC-owned WMAQ Channel 5 and Telemundo Chicago’s WSNS Channel 44. Both stations are owned by Comcast-NBC Universal.
In an email to workers, Doebler stated that he was voluntarily stepping down to spend more time with his wife, Susan. He wrote, “I am fortunate to say that I have had the joy of doing what I love for over four decades.” However, as my wife Susan and I have a long list of items on our wish list, I will retire after the end of the May book. It’s the right time for us and we couldn’t be more excited. ”
For the previous three years, he served as vice president of creative services and sales for WNCN in Raleigh, originally owned by NBC. He began his career in local television, working for 11 years at WCAU, an NBC-owned station in Philadelphia, with various sales responsibilities.
He began his career at NBC Connecticut, an NBC-owned station, where he worked for eight years. David and his team are also responsible for the design and construction of a new state-of-the-art transmission facility that has served as a model for other local stations across the country. He won regional Emmys and several Associated Press awards during his time at NBC. They include a 2013 Peabody Award for station coverage of the Connecticut school massacre.
