Drew Brees Bio
Drew Christopher Brees was born on January 15, 1979, in Austin, Texas, in the United States. He comes from the athletic stars line, his father played basketball for the Texas A&M Aggie’s Men’s Team, while his mother was an all-state champion in sports during high school. His uncle Marty Akins was the quarterback of the All-Southwest Conference in 1975, while his paternal grandfather, Ray Akins, was a great coach in the history of Texas high school football. He has a younger brother named Reid Brees, and they were raised by their father, Eugene Wilson Brees II, who is a well-known lawyer, and their mother, Mina Ruth Akins, who is also a lawyer.
At the age of seven, his parents divorced and received equal custody of their two children. This led to Drew and his brother sharing their time in the homes of both parents. They also have a half-sister named Audrey from their father’s remarriage. He attended Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, where he played both basketball and baseball.
During his high school years, Drew led his school club to the top in the regular season and also won a state championship. After graduating, he enrolled at Purdue University in 1997 where he earned a degree in industrial management and worked as a quarterback for the Purdue team called Boilermakers. He was a two-time Heisman finalist, which catapulted his team to the Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl in 2000. Following his outstanding performances, he was honored with the Maxwell Award for Best College Player of the Nation, the National Football Foundation Scholarship and the All-American Player of the Year Academic Award.
Professional Career
After graduating from Purdue in 2000, Drew began his career in 2001 when he was drafted by the San Diego Chargers. He made his first appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs in November 2001, and in 2002 he earned a place as a full-time starter with the club, leading the team to the playoffs in 2004. He left the San Diego Chargers in 2005 after his career ended and later signed a six-year contract with the New Orleans Saints for $60 million in 2006. His move to New Orleans was fraught with difficulties as the city was still in the recovery phase after the devastating Hurricane Katrina.
However, Drew Brees has been with the club to this day and is considered one of the club’s best quarterbacks. He led the Saints to victory in the 2009 Super Bowl XLIV and was also named the tournament’s most valuable player. He set a new NFL record by completing 5,476 passing yards in 2011 and 2012; his contract was extended with another five-year $100 million contracts, the highest contract ever signed in the NFL. The elite quarterback also wrote another two-year contract for $50 million in 2018, with $27 million guaranteed with the Saints.
Scar
If you take a closer look at the New Orleans Saints star Drew Brees, you would notice a scar on his face. The scar, which is very noticeable and often used to make fun of the superstar, is actually a birthmark. It is quite unusual to see a celebrity with such a big scar on his face. Time without numbers many people, including Oprah Winfrey, had thought it was a lipstick stain when they first met Brees and tried to wipe it off.
When he was a child, people often made fun of him for being different and called him all sorts of names that he felt were hurtful. Now he has become famous and has the choice to either remove the scar or use it to send a message. Brees never considered plastic surgery, although he had the resources to do it. Rather, he sees the birthmark as a sign of uniqueness and as something that makes him special in his own way.
And for those who foresee whether he would remove it or not, Drew says, as long as there are no health problems associated with it, it stays right where it is. The star has used the scar as a medium to show the world that it’s good to be different and that it doesn’t stop you from achieving greatness, but rather helps you get there.
