Frederik Pleitgen is a German journalist who currently works as a senior international correspondent based in CNN’s London office. Between 2006 and 2014, he was a correspondent for CNN in Berlin. While there, he provided insight into the political, economic, and cultural influences of this major European power.
Studied North American Studies at Rheinische Fredrich-Wilhelms-University in Bonn and in Free University of Berlin, where he presented his master’s thesis on the traditions of American journalism. In addition, he spent a year studying at the School of Journalism at New York University. Later, in 2004, he received a scholarship from the Institute of Cultural Diplomacy in the San Fernando Valley.
Before joining the current broadcaster, he worked in the political unit of the German public service broadcaster ZDF. Furthermore, he previously worked at the private news broadcaster N-TV as a reporter and executive producer. He also spent time working for RFL and TV Berlin.
Pleitgen covered big stories such as the 2004 Asian tsunami. He also covered the death of Pope John Paul II and the subsequent election of the first German pope. Furthermore, he has a London reporter during the July 2005 terrorist attacks.
