Greg Screws Biography
Greg Screws is an American journalist who is currently the co-anchor of WHNT News 19 at 5 pm, 6 pm and 10 pm. He grew up in Hartselle, Alabama, United States, where he attended the University of Alabama. His daughter currently works at the University of Alabama.
Growing up in Alabama, Greg had an unspectacular basketball career, which led to him becoming a little league dad while his daughter played basketball. Gaining support from her father, Emily became a very good player on a team that finished second in the AAU national championship and won the state sports festival three years in a row.
During his college life, Greg befriended a young man named Louis Gump and encouraged him to write down all the stories his father told him. Louis Gump’s father was Forrest Gump, and the rest is history.
After leaving Hartselle and realizing that his higher education was a challenge despite being a career goal, he joined the University of Alabama. He majored in Communications and worked on WCFT television before moving to WVTM in Birmingham. His stay on Birmingham television sparked his love for NASCAR and was also where he realized that meteorologists rarely picked up the check at lunch.
His next stop was Richmond, Virginia, specifically at WRIC television. On the station, Greg worked with Chip Tarkenton, the nephew of the great Fran Tarkenton of the NFL. From Richmond, Screws returned to Huntsville, where he did sports and morning television for eight years.

However, it took a phone call from a friend to make him think about being on television again.
“Denise Vickers is one of the best news directors in the country,” said Greg. “I was flattered when she called and wanted me to immediately join WHNT’s team of sharp and focused managers who take their job and craft very seriously.”
