Harry Shum Jr. is an American dancer, actor, and choreographer who gained fame for playing the role of Mike Chang in a FOX TV series called Glee and Magnus Bane in the Free Form fantasy series called Shadowhunters. He also gained more fame and popularity by portraying the role of Benson Kwan on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy (since 2022). Chum has also been nominated for six Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Ensemble on shows including Crazy Rich Asians and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Shum was born in Limon, Costa Rica to Chinese immigrants, but raised in San Francisco, California. Therefore, he grew up learning to speak fluent Spanish and Cantonese. Harry also grew up as a very talented boy who enjoyed dancing and performing from a very young age. He attended San Luis Obispo County but graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 2000. He then enrolled at San Francisco State University but dropped out. Chum dropped out of university during his third year to pursue a career in dancing.
Harry started his career by moving to Los Angeles, California and working with great choreographers like Rosero McCoy and Jamal Sims. He even toured the UK as a backup dancer for a famous American singer named Kaci. Chum was focused on building his career as a dancer. Therefore, he started appearing on BET’s Comic View and Apple’s famous dance show called Dancing Silhouettes.
In 2004, he was able to join Missy Elliot, Beyonce and Alicia Keys as a backup dancer for their co-headlining tour called Ladies First. He also worked as a backup dancer for Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey before making his acting debut.
Shum made his acting debut starring in Step 2 and its following third part called Step Up 3D. From there, Harry landed his breakout role as Mike Chang on Glee. He played the role from 2009 to 2015.
