Jalen Hurts was born on August 7, 1998, in Channelview, Texas, where he grew up. The son of a former soccer player, Hurts began playing soccer at Channelview High School.
Besides soccer, the boy also competed as a powerlifter. Hurts had an impressive high school career, made it into the second year of the entire district’s second-team selection, and was named the overall VMP of District 21-6A in his junior year. Jalen Hurts stormed 1,391 yards and scored 25 touchdowns in his senior year.
He was ranked a 4-star recruit and despite the interest of Texas A&M, he chose the University of Alabama where he became a starting quarterback as a true rookie, an unprecedented move under the leadership of head coach Nick Saban, who has an affinity for experienced quarterbacks.

Jalen Hurts broke many records in his freshman year and won the SEC “Freshman of the Year” award. He led the team to the SEC title and was also named SEC Offensive Player of the Year. In 2017, he won the 2018 national college soccer playoff championship.
After winning 26 of his 28 starts, he surprisingly lost his starting position to the real newcomer Tua Tagovailoa in the 2018 season. As a result, many speculated that he would move to another school, but coach Saban was able to convince him to stay on as a replacement.

Jalen’s father is a former soccer player who began his career at Channelview (Texas) High School, the same high school his son would attend years later. He graduated with the class of 1986 and attended Howard Payne University, where he played college football and actively participated in athletic events. Averion Sr. graduated in 1990 with a major in marketing.
Before becoming a coach at Channelview in 2006, Averion Hurts Sr. coached the football team at Robert E. Lee High School in Bytown, Texas.
Pamela, Jalen Hurts’ mother, also has a job coaching high school students. She has two degrees, a B.A. in Business Administration and an M Sc in Counseling, and is the Chair of the Special Services Department at Channelview ISD. She is also the school’s math special education teacher. Pamela Hurts also works at the LCPL Anthony Aguirre Junior High School.
Jalen Hurts is the middle child of his family. He has an older brother named Averion Jr. after her father and a younger sister named Kennedy. Jalen’s older brother Averion also played soccer in Channelview, and both were coached by their father.
Averion Jr. played college football for two seasons at Kilgore JC in Texas before moving to Texas Southern University where he became the starting quarterback. Her parents often split up to be at every game the boy played when their games met on the same weekend.

In his senior year, Averion Jr. threw 1,857 yards, scored 12 touchdowns, and made 51.1 percent of his passes.
