In 1968, he reported on the “Historical Student Riots” in Columbia for the university radio station WKCR-FM. Gardner became a desk assistant, journalist and producer for 1010 WINS in New York in 1970.
Gardner became a reporter for WFAS radio in White Plains, New York, in 1972, and soon became news director. Two years later, he began his career in television broadcasting at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York.
